There is an International Supermarket near us, where I usually get my Indian stuffs. We had been there last Saturday. This supermarket also has a Middle East restaurant. Not sure if I have mentioned earlier in the blog, me and hubby are vegetarians and only exception is EGG ๐Ÿ˜€ Yes we do have eggs. So its difficult for us to get a vegetarian restaurant many times. This restaurant hadย Falafel, my hubby had tried it earlier, so he wanted to have it. I made sure asking everyone if it is vegetarian ๐Ÿ™‚ hehehe, the lady over the counter smiled and told me ‘Yes’ its a vegetarian dish. So we ordered it.

To my surprise it had the exact same taste as vada in India. But there was no oil. This looked very healthy and was very tasty. I definitely wanted to make it at home. Then I got to know it is made of Chickpeas. Vada is also made of Channa dal which is again chickpea ๐Ÿ™‚ And how did they make it without oil, it was baking, I simply loved it and here is my try which came out very tasty ๐Ÿ™‚

For those who wouldn’t prefer oil frying, this is a great choice.

I had used black chickpea, since I had only that at home ๐Ÿ™‚ , usually its made of white chickpeas.

Ingredients:

Chickpeas : 1 cup soaked for 8 hrs

Onion : 1 half

Cilantro Leaves : 3 tablespoons chopped

Garlic : 4 pod

Ginger : 1/2 teaspoon grated

Salt : 1 teaspoon

Black Pepper powder : 1 tablespoon

Cumin Powder : 1 tablespoon

Olive Oil : 1 teaspoon

Method:

 

Preheat oven to 450 deg.

After soaking the chickpea for 8 hours, wash and drain them. Chop roughly onion, cilantro leaves, garlic. Put them in a food processor and process for 2 mins. Since I do not have food processor, I used my grinder. I added some curry leaves, dill leaves which is optional.

Add, salt, black pepper powder, olive oil and mix well.

Just check if it tastes good with all the flavors, or adjust it.

In a baking tray, grease it with butter generously. make small flat round patties of the above in the tray.

Bake one side for 10 mins, remove and flip to the other side and bake for another 10 mins.

Now the tasty Falafels are ready ๐Ÿ™‚ You can serve it with hummus.
